Protection of personal information policy

INTRODUCTION

In accordance with private sector privacy legislation, we have developed this Privacy Policy which describes how we collect, use and disclose personal information.

We adhere to ethical standards and our code of conduct when handling all information, particularly personal information.

All personal information is covered by this policy, regardless of its form: e-mail, text messages, recordings, photos, videos, computer files, etc.

TYPE OF INFORMATION COLLECTED

As a claim adjusting firm, we collect only the personal information required to process and investigate claims for which we are mandated. For example, to:

  • establish the circumstances surrounding the loss, damage or prejudice,
  • establish the cause of the loss,
  • analyze and apply the insurance contract,
  • validate the legitimacy of the claim,
  • assess damages,
  • calculate indemnity.

Because each claim is unique, we may collect different types of personal information. For example, we may collect :

  • identity and biographical information,
  • contact information,
  • financial information,
  • insurance history,
  • background checks.

DRL identifies the purposes for which it collects personal information and informs individuals verbally or in writing prior to collection. The file is annotated accordingly.

DRL will identify any new purposes for the collection of personal information that arise during the processing of the claim and inform the individuals concerned.

CONSENT

DRL must obtain the consent of the persons concerned to collect, use and communicate personal information, except in cases where the law provides an exemption.

Consent may be written, oral or implied in the circumstances prescribed by law.

DRL obtains consent for each of the purposes for which it collects, uses and discloses personal information.

Consent may be withdrawn at any time.

DISCLOSURE

Personal information will not be used or disclosed for purposes other than those for which it was collected, except with the consent of the individual concerned or as required by law.

While investigating and processing claims, DRL may collect personal information from third parties and, where appropriate, disclose it to others. For example:

  • Insurance companies, brokerage firms or claims adjusters,
  • Financial institutions,
  • Credit bureaus,
  • Fire and police departments,
  • Municipal authorities,
  • Estimators, appraisers, contractors, suppliers of goods or services.

Personal information is also disclosed to our principals.

CONSERVATION

Personal information is recorded in a damage insurance file kept at 3065 Levesque West blvd., Laval, Quebec H7V 4B1. Computerized personal information is hosted in Canada.

We keep personal information only as long as it is required for the purposes set out in this Policy and to comply with legal obligations.

At the end of this retention period, personal information will be destroyed or erased.

PROTECTION

We follow generally accepted industry standards to protect the information we collect, whether at the time of collection, use, disclosure, retention or destruction.

We maintain appropriate physical, technical or administrative safeguards to protect personal information against accidental or unlawful destruction or accidental loss, alteration, unauthorized disclosure or access, misuse or other unlawful forms of processing of personal information in our possession.

We take steps to ensure that employees who have access to your personal information are those who have a need to know or whose duties reasonably require such information.

However, no method of transmission over the Internet, nor any means of electronic storage, is 100% secure. We therefore cannot ensure or warrant the security of any information you transmit to us. Nor can we guarantee that such information will not be accessed, obtained, disclosed, modified or destroyed as a result of a breach of our physical, technical or administrative safeguards. If you have reason to believe that personal information has been compromised, please contact us as indicated in the “Contact Us” section.

ACCESS AND RECTIFICATION

A request for access to personal information contained in the claim file may be made by sending a written request to the address below. This request will be processed within 30 days of receipt, in accordance with the relevant provisions of the Act respecting the protection of personal information in the private sector, other legislation and the insurance contract.

Similarly, a request for rectification may be made with respect to inaccurate, incomplete or equivocal personal information contained in the file. This request will also be processed within 30 days of receipt, in accordance with the relevant provisions of the Act respecting the protection of personal information in the private sector and the Civil Code of Québec.

 

USE OF COOKIES

The DRL site uses cookies to:

  1. Distinguish between individual users by means of designating a randomly generated number as a customer identifier, which makes it possible to calculate visits and sessions.
  2. Provide data on the user’s use of the website.

1. WHAT IS A COOKIE?

A cookie is a text file deposited by the servers of consulted websites or by third-party servers, in a dedicated space on the hard disk of your terminal (computer, tablet, cell phone or any other device optimized for the Internet), when you consult online content or advertising. It records information about your browsing habits.

This Cookie file can only be read by its issuer, who uses it, during its period of validity, to recognize the terminal concerned each time this terminal accesses digital content containing Cookies from the issuer. Cookies do not identify you personally, but only your terminal’s browser.

There are several types of Cookies (see point 2).

However, the refusal of certain Cookies may cause the degradation of a certain number of functions necessary for navigation on the Website (display difficulties, etc.). We cannot be held responsible for such malfunctions.

Performance cookies

These cookies collect information about how visitors use a website. For example, which pages are visited most often and whether error messages are issued. Cookies do not collect personally identifiable data. Insofar as all the information collected by these cookies is aggregated, it remains anonymous. These cookies are only intended to improve the operation of the website.

These cookies enable us to measure the traffic or audience associated with our website, the pages visited and the interactions carried out on the Site during your visit. Disabling them therefore prevents any collection of information relating to your browsing on our Site.

Functionality cookies

These cookies enable the site to remember the choices you have made (such as your user name, the language you have chosen or the region you are in) and provide more precise and personal features. These cookies can also be used to remember changes made by the user, such as text size or font. They can also be used to provide services you have requested, such as watching a video or leaving a comment on a blog. The information collected by these cookies can be made anonymous and cannot track your browsing activity on other sites.
